Railway infrastructure plays an essential role in implementing Hungary’s foreign trade strategy, the foreign minister said at a rail conference, according MTI.

Hungary’s trade figures have surpassed records in every year since 2014, and this achievement must now be consolidated by further developing the country’s infrastructure, Péter Szijjártó told participants of the Hungarian Railway Association’s conference. The government has earmarked 1,500 billion forints (EUR 4.8bn) for rail development projects by 2020, Szijjártó said. These include upgrading 900 kilometers of rail tracks and putting new trains in operation, adding 45,000 seats to the current stock, he added.

At the conference, Szijjártó announced that a tender for the upgrade of the Hungarian stretch of the Budapest-Belgrade rail line will be called when Budapest hosts the next China-CEE summit in November. Serbia is expected to start upgrading its stretch of the line during the summit with the Chinese premier and prime ministers from 16 countries in the CEE region, he said. He also added that negotiations were under way with Croatia to provide passenger rail services between Budapest and Sarajevo.
